Hello Bump Podcast Episodes 2 & 3

One week ago today, we officially announced that our lives are changing forever.  Baby L is on the way and the excitement has only built for us with each passing day.  Our first official baby package arrived this morning from Little Me and I opened it this morning on my Insta-stories.  My heart basically exploded over all of the tiny, adorable pieces!

Hello Bump Podcast Episodes 2 & 3 angela and matt lanter hello gorgeous

Now that I’m fully into my second trimester, I’m feeling the baby move which is such a rewarding experience.  I shared on Monday’s episode of Hello Bump the guilt I felt at 6 weeks because I didn’t have this overwhelming sense of love for our baby yet.  Those feelings were obviously very human and I think many women don’t feel like they can verbalize them, if they also have those feelings.  At 6 weeks, I didn’t feel pregnant…  Instead, I felt like I had a bad case of the flu.  I was overall pretty miserable.  If I’m being 100% transparent with you, I was feeling a bit depressed for the first time I can really remember in my life.  I was down about feeling so sick and knowing that there were all these changes coming…  Changes with my body, with our lives and in our marriage.  Please don’t take my honesty as me saying that I wasn’t ecstatic about becoming a mom.  I’ve never for one second regretted this pregnancy.  It was as if my physical condition was taking a toll on my mental and emotional states, making me feel depressed.

Those sad feelings only lasted a few short days, but I wanted to take a moment and be very real and very raw with you here in case there were any other women who are experiencing sad moments in the beginning of their pregnancy.  If that is or was you, girlfriend you are not alone!  To me, these feelings are totally normal.  We’re going through so many changes in our bodies and seeing how different our lives are going to look in just less than a year.  Again, in my opinion, these feelings and thoughts are totally normal, especially for us first timers.

Today, we released Episode #3 of Hello Bump which covers weeks 7 and 8 of my pregnancy.  In this episode we get to hear the baby’s heartbeat and see an ultrasound for the first time.  We share our feelings about that doctor’s appointment as well as a clip of Baby L’s galloping little pulse (so sweet I could cry all over again!)  We talk more about my symptoms, give you WAY too much info about my bodily functions and talk about my OBGYN putting me on anti-nausea medication, Diclegis.  Personally, I’m having so much fun going back and listening to our experiences and thoughts again.  It’s such a fun way for Matt and I to relive this experience with each other with every new episode we publish!

We also talk about the genetics blood test I went through and the mutations that were found in my genes.  This was a bit of a freak out moment for me at first until I dug in and found out what my mutations were and what they meant.

While we’re talking about this episode, do any of you have this crazy fear of vomiting like I do?  It’s a very real fear that gives me serious anxiety when I start to feel nauseous.  Let me know in the comments section below!  Also, let me know if your husband had pregnancy symptoms along with you.

Hi Angela! Congrats on your baby 🙂

I have an INSANE fear of throwing up. I’ve had it my whole life and I think it may be one of the few things I have regular anxiety about.

I can trace times all throughout my childhood when someone would throw up around me and it would freak me out or I would cry. I assume that’s what sparked it. I don’t really drink a lot for fear of throwing up. If someone has the stomach flu, I get anxious around them and avoid them at all costs. As I’ve gotten older the fear is a little less irrational but I definitely am nervous about how pregnancy will affect me and my fear. It’s great to hear that someone else has it too and hopefully it hasn’t been too bad!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • I used to have a fear of vomiting. I went years without throwing up and built the idea up in my mind. Then I had for kids who brought in a never ending stream of viruses and delivered them up to me with a big wet kiss and suddenly I was getting sick and throwing up more than ever! That helps you get over your fear of it. 🙂 ironically, I never once threw up bc of being pregnant!

As someone who is hoping to get pregnant in the near future, I love hearing your podcast and learning what to expect. To be honest, I really had to comment because you two laughed about napping on a dog bed. I literally do it all the time 🙂 Dogs aren’t dumb – that laying on the dog bed when the sun is streaming in is pure genius! Best of luck to you two and keep the posts coming!

Thank you for posting about some depression symptoms. So many woman go through it including myself, during and postpartum. There is no shame in those feelings. We didn’t have our first ultrasound or hear the heartbeat until I was 14 weeks (which is when we found out we were having twins) so I truly didn’t feel that “love” for this thing that I had no evidence of except someone telling me I was pregnant. All I knew was that I was exhausted, emotional and no family around to lean on. Listening to your podcast has brought back so many memories of that time (almost 18 years ago). You remind me so much of my first pregnancy, even napping on the couch! It’s just more comfortable! Just remember all situations will pass, the bad moments won’t last forever so try to enjoy as much as you can and LEARN TO USE THAT CAMERA for when Matt may be gone! You won’t regret it! One tip- don’t tell the name until after you have the baby! I have 3 boys, Lincoln, William (Will) and Gabriel (Gabe). We changed all 3 boys’ names after delivery in some way once we met them. All have family maiden names for middle names. It will give you flexibility! So best wishes to you both and good luck!

  • Love listening in! And I love how honest you are being. I am a mom of 2 and when a friend of mine was pregnant for her first she kept accusing me of not informing her about ‘real’ pregnancy and motherhood and my response was…..is there a way I could have explained it to you that you could have fully appreciated without experiencing it? Not really! LOL. The only part I could explain that she really got was that I called the first trimester the “narcoleptic cow” phase. Because you don’t feel ‘pregnant’ you really just feel like a bloated cow. Seriously I am NOT a napper but when I was pregnant I would nap constantly and nap HARD! Like, I would wake up with a wet pillow and a face full of drool with sheet marks I would sleep so hard! Ewww! haha
Happy to hear all was well, is well, etc. 🙂

  • I can totally relate to not feeling extatic all the time. Reminds me of my pregnancy almost 14 years ago. Even after she was born I LOVED her more than life but I was so tired and exhausted, I didn’t feel over the moon all the time and then I felt guilty that I didn’t feel over the moon all time. I came to realize that this is normal. We now have two beautiful children a 13 year old daughter and a 10 year old son. I can say enjoy each stage at its fullest, charish all the little moments. They go by way too fast.

Thank you for sharing your experience so candidly so that other women know these feelings are all normal.

We are so very happy for your you both.

  • Feeling baby move was one of the best things about pregnancy! I didn’t particularly enjoy being pregnant but when she was moving around kicking and flipping it was SO cool. And I totally get the not feeling that overwhelming love at first. It’s so hard because you feel so sick and do just feel like you have the flu.

Also the fear of throwing up, SO real. I was chewing gum constantly anytime I had to be in a social situation because that helped me. It was especially hard in the first 12 weeks or so before most people knew that I was pregnant.

When that baby is born and you hold him/her for the first time will be one of the best moments of your life! One thing I wish I’d done is have a birth photographer! My husband takes wonderful photos like Matt does and has all the gear but I wanted him focused on me and the baby and enjoying the experience. So if I get to have another baby then I would probably do a birth photographer to really capture those moments!

Sorry for the novel. So excited for y’all!

I was in awe today listening to you talk about your fear because I struggle with the same exact thing! People just don’t understand how terrible my mind makes throwing up to be!! ? Makes me so nervous for when I’m ready to have children but this episode gave me hope!! So happy for y’all and loving this podcast so much!

  • Hey, Angela and Matt!
LOVE the podcasts, and I am so excited for the both of you!
Just commenting about the vials of blood drawn for testing. I’m from South Africa and I also had to have that much blood work done, also about nine or ten vials. We did it especially for the genetic mutations that you spoke about, and also for HIV, Hepatitis, and for a few other things that I can’t seem to remember right now (Pregnancy brain doesn’t just go away when baby is born LOL, my little girl is 21 months and my brain still sucks!)
I also struggled with the hunger nausea, and heartburn was bad in my first trimester, but then again I had always had heartburn before.
Loved listening to the heartbeat, it’s so beautiful. That was my favorite part of the ultrasounds, after seeing our little baby on the screen of course. Ours also had a yolk sac (still present at 8 weeks)
I had an ectopic pregnancy before and I went up to 14 weeks before they had to remove it. No damage to my fallopian tubes, luckily, but it was a sad, sad day.
Thank you for sharing your journey, and thanks for telling us how it is, I can relate to almost everything you are going through!
    Love you guys!

  • Congratulations from Sweden!!
I was SO happy for your fantastic news, both of you are going to be amazing parents!

Could you write a post about your thoughts about labour and delivery?

And lastly, where is your lovely dress from?

    Hugs and kisses from Stockholm

I’m loving y’alls podcast! We just started trying to get pregnant so I’m really enjoying hearing more “real life” about pregnancy.

I died in episode 3 when you talked about your fear of vomiting. I legit have a phobia of it – more so of other people doing it but girl, everyone tells me too “what are you going to to when you have kids?” I legit don’t know lol!! Anyways, I did want to pass on a tip – if you feel sick, get cold. Put ice on you, whatever you need to do but make your body cold and your body will need to keep the vom inside so you can stay warm. It’s a tip from NASA for Astronauts and it’s worked every time! Congratulations and I can’t wait to keep up with the baby 🙂

  • Wow, I love your podcast! How neat! Really great job!

  • Hi Angela!

This has brought back so many memories of my first pregnancy two years ago with my baby boy and I wanted to give you my experiences. 🙂 (things that helped me so much as well). I fell asleep last night listening to your episode 3 podcast and wanted to share some of what helped me through my pregnancy that I wish I would have known.

I didn’t find out I was pregnant until I was already 7-8 weeks. I remember gaining weight suddenly and going ,”Okay, this is weird…” lol. I never gained weight because I maintained it so well. Then suddenly having morning sickness, oh my lord was I sick all the time and I envy that you haven’t thrown up. I was throwing up all the time! I couldn’t eat anything at all, I couldn’t even go into the kitchen because all the smells of food made me nauseous. After eating something, ten minutes (I kid you not) later I’d throw it up again.

I have the same fear of throwing up (I hate it more than anything because it feels like you’re dying) and have never been more miserable than that time.

What I have found is lemon helps (just the scent), (the white peppermint life savers truly helped me). Apple sauce was the only thing I was able to eat that didn’t come back up.

Also, napping whenever you can takes away sickness as well. You’ll also want to sleep as much as you can because you won’t be getting very much of it once your little one is born. 🙂

Once you hit the second trimester, the sickness usually goes away and you will feel a tremendous boost of energy (it was my favorite part of pregnancy). Although, I still couldn’t eat what I normally would have.

Another thing I noticed was the prenatal vitamins made me sick (weird I know) so I switched over to a regular women’s multivitamin (but in gummy form- which my doctor said was just fine).

Cold oranges was another thing I craved.

Stay away from spicy foods — they give heart burn almost instantly.

Third trimester is a fun time (laughs), you’ll want to sleep at an angle leaning against pillows. I remember if I laid flat, I couldn’t breathe because my stomach was big and the baby pressed on my lungs. (He loved to kick especially at night time too lol).

Two more tips I want to give you that might save you from embarrassment lol.

Wear pads, because you might just pee yourself without warning lol.

When you think you’re in labor near the last weeks, you will know. They will be constant cramps that get stronger as the hour progresses. Something you can’t ignore, it may feel like diarrhea cramps too. (Gross I know but it’s something my mom told me lol). However, if the cramps don’t stop, you need to go to your doctor asap.

I’ll keep you and your baby in my prayers, that you won’t have any complications and have a healthy adorable baby! 🙂

  • I honestly get goosebumps seeing these more “intimate” photos of you and Matt. You have no idea how excited I am for you guys. And it’s totally understandable of you being a little sad/depressed. I’m going through kind of a similar situation. I’m graduating college in May and I’m a little sad that my entire life is going to change. I’m content with where I am in my life and I’m not ready to be settled down to just one job. It’s hard to explain, but sometimes the future is scary

I always had a fear of vomiting growing up! I would do everything in my power to fight it off and could count on one hand how many times I threw up in life…. until I got pregnant. I threw up every single morning for all 9 months. It was really hard for me since I was always so afraid of it!

  • First pregnancies are always a ball of nerves. You have nothing to gage you’re feeling on and being sick doesn’t help at all! I never threw up with mine but I constantly had that hangover feeling from week 7 – 14. It was horrid. But it does get better towards the end. Promise!

  • Just got done listening! Oh my gosh. I have never met anyone like me when it comes to my deathly fear of vomiting. I am 22 weeks pregnant today with my 3rd child and I never vomited with either of them. This pregnancy I was very nauseous but never vomited. About 3 weeks ago I drank some lemon juice before bed and woke up in the middle of the night about to vomit and I thought I was dying. My husband just rolls his eyes and tells me to let it out lol I was crying hysterically praying to God, like please I will do anything lol don’t let me vomit! I will literally do anything but vomit. I feel you girl. I loved listening to these! It’s fun reminiscing about the early horrible weeks lol so glad they’re over. Can’t wait to continue this journey with you guys!

  • Joanna Clute

It’s perfectly normal to not be head over heels for something that’s only been growing for 6 weeks. You’ve barely met it and it’s still new.

  • Brittany Blackburn

Love all y’alls episodes, Angela! Listening to Baby Lanter’s heartbeat made me tear up, too! Such an amazingly special moment! Thanks so much for sharing it! I mailed the baby’s gift card today! You should receive it soon!

  • Nikki Arnold

OMG this is too hilarious!!! I love this, I don’t fart in front of my SO though I could care less if he does. I also like go all the way across the house and lock the bedroom door if I’m using the bathroom LOL. I think us women just feel like we don’t want to be looked at weird haha, even though everyone does it.

    • Angela Lanter

Haha well that all changed for me with this pregnancy! 🙂

  • You two are so funny to listen to. Even though my babies are 10 & 8, this brings back so many memories!! My very first symptom with BOTH of my pregnancies was heart burn. As one who never ever experienced heart burn prior – I knew immediately with my second I was pregnant with the heart burn hit. No 3rd trimester for me, it subsided after the first trimester. Blessings to you both as you continue the amazing journey of parenthood!!

  • Camille Hatch

Just started listening to your podcast today. Love it! I love your’s and Matt’s candidness concerning the reality of pregnancy. I’ve had 4 kiddos of my own along with being a birth doula for 12 years and L&D/MB nurse since 2016. I’ve learned a few tips and tricks.

For both you and Matt, try papaya enzymes! They save you for all things digestion! Gas, bloating, indigestion, heart burn. Many of my clients couldn’t get anything to work for their heart burn until they tried the enzymes. You can get them online or at most health food stores.

So looking forward to hearing more of your pregnancy, birth, and now parenting journey!

    • Angela Lanter

Yay!! I’m so happy you like it, Camille!! Welcome to the Gorgeous Fam I’m so happy to have you here!
I took papaya during my first trimester and had great success with it!
I hope to hear more from you! Did you catch some of my mama videos on YouTube? They’re fun too. 🙂

      • Camille Hatch

I’ll definitely check them out! And shoot any medical type questions you have my way! I love to help with all things mama and baby!
