The Idea of You Movie Outfit Ideas.
I had the pleasure of attending an early viewing of The Idea of You this weekend and literally couldn’t wait to talk to someone, ANYONE, about the movie vs. the book.
Here’s the problem… No one I know has read the dang book yet.
So, naturally, the next best thing to talk about? The fashion, duh.
PS- Did you know that “The Idea of You” is reportedly the most watched movie trailer of a streaming movie of all time?!
Anne Hathaway stars as 40 year old Solène and I couldn’t stop oogling her outfits in every single scene.
I don’t know whether to refer to Solène’s style as “French chic” or “Parisian fashion”… Somehow, both titles fit, as well as “Old Money” in some ways.
Think Sezane meets For Love and Lemons.
There was so much lingerie. There was satin lingerie, lace lingerie, and more, but not because the movie is riddled with racy scenes (there are a couple) but because that’s what Solène just always seemed to be wearing.
I was so drawn to the wardrobe because she was wearing all things I want to wear everyday in my real life, lol.
How do I get a French chic look?
When I think of French or Parisian style, my mind immediately goes a few places…
- Trench coats
- Stripes
- Ballet flats
- Red lips
I’m not wrong here.
That’s why I chose to focus first on the film wardrobe staple: the camel trench coat.
A fabulous trench coat can take you places. My personal favorite trench is from Sezane, but it’s A) always sold out online and B) not cheap.
There are a million other options to choose from online to get similar, if not the same exact look and style.

French fashion is iconic. French women tend to wear a lot of neutral basics and know how to dress them up beautifully.
Look at Solène’s outfit is below. It’s timeless, classic, and chic, being made up of two very basic pieces: a soft v-neck cami and a satin slip skirt.
Recreate this look.
This look is your simple top and jeans. I’m pretty positive that she’s wearing the Alice + Olivia Janine lace-up polo sweater, which is sadly discontinued.
What I’m really focusing on here is how well accessorized she is.
I love the super dainty gold choker necklace she wears throughout the movie, as well as the chunky gold rings on most fingers.
Her hat and eyewear throughout the movie is positively enviable.
This next look she wore to a concert and it’s this feminine, flirty two-piece number that I am basically coveting.

Solène also wears the blue velvet blazer, a striped v-neck sweater, a beautiful dress/two-piece number, and so.much.lingerie that I’d love to share. Sadly, the photos just aren’t out yet.
