The best part is that almost everything in her room is very affordable.
The Girl Bedroom Furniture We Chose
This is the part I know you’re actually here for, so let’s start with it instead of burying it at the bottom.
Bed: I wanted something that would still feel right in a few years, not something that reads as “toddler” the second she outgrows it. I love that it’s a trundle to allow for extra sleeping space when needed.
Dresser: Sizing this correctly for the room mattered more than I expected. Be sure to always measure your space before you fall in love with a piece online.
Nightstand: A simple, budget-friendly pick that doesn’t compete with the dresser. I wanted something small enough to leave room for her to actually use the space around her bed.
Reading nook chair: This cutie little bean bag chair is the perfect way to get your littles to cozy up with a book.
Bedding: Soft, easy to layer, and durable enough for a kid who’s still learning to make her own bed. We LOVE Beddy’s!
Lighting: Warm without being too soft-lit for reading before bed. This is the lamp on her dresser, not the ceiling fixture.
Storage baskets: These do double duty catching stuffed animals and hiding the toys that don’t have a “real” home yet.

Why This Room Took So Long to Get Right
Our Ohio house is the project Matt and I have been chipping away at for years now, and the kids’ rooms kept getting pushed behind the bigger stuff. Kitchens and bathrooms are the rooms that get attention first when you’re renovating a house in phases, and bedrooms tend to wait.
But every time we made a trip up from Nashville, Kenny would walk into this room and ask when it was going to be hers. I’ve been intentional about choosing pieces that felt right for both Kenny and the space itself.
How We Chose the Design Direction
Our Ohio home is decorated to feel organic modern, but still livable for a family with small kids who constantly entertain. I wanted Kenny’s bedroom to feel livable, warm, inviting, but still sweet since she’s only 8 years old.
Here’s what guided the furniture choices specifically:
- Pieces that grow with her. Kenny is at the age where “little kid” furniture stops working fast, so everything in here was chosen to last several years, not just the current season of life we are in.
- A warm, grounded palette. Soft neutrals and warm wood tones instead of anything too bright or too themed. I love a theme, but not one that will be grown out of too quickly.
- Texture over trend. Woven baskets, a chunky knit throw, and layered bedding do more work than any single statement piece. I don’t decorate with trends in mind.
- One true splurge. The most expensive piece in her room was her dresser and the quality is really great.
Our Real Bedroom Makeover Budget
Furniture: The biggest line item by far, and where I’d tell you not to skimp. If you are choosing pieces that will grow with your kiddos, then choose pieces that will last.
Bedding and textiles: Beddy’s is where it’s at for kids learning to make their own beds.
Paint: The single best cost-per-impact line in this whole budget. We chose the color “Ella Rose” from the Magnolia paint collection.
Carpet, lighting, and decor: Carpet was the best choice by far. We used Heavenly by Couristan carpet and every single person who steps foot inside her room asks where we got this carpet?!
If you’re working out your own bedroom makeover budget, spend where your kid will actually notice, the bed and one investment piece that will grow with them. Let paint do quiet, inexpensive work everywhere else.

“Ella Rose” by Magnolia. I chose it because it reads warm and soft in daylight without going too pastel, so it works now and will still feel age-appropriate in a few years. I love that it is a peachy pink, which is hard to find.
