Petite is a word I’m very familiar with. My Mawmaw was the definition of petite. Growing up in Ohio, her favorite store to shop for her petite clothes, handbags, cosmetics and (size 5) shoes was always Macy’s. In fact, that was the only store she ever really shopped at.
I spent many a Saturday shopping the Macy’s petite section with Mawmaw and my mom. We would go to Macy’s, get her shopping done, then she would take me to KB Toys and to Woolworth’s for a hot dog and a Coke, while my mom shopped to her heart’s content. I have so many good memories about shopping with Mawmaw… And one not so good, but extremely funny memory.
One very snowy Saturday night, my mom took Mawmaw, myself (about 6 years old), and my teenage cousins, Mindy and Steve, shopping. My mom and Mindy left to do their thing, and said they would pick us up outside of Macy’s in 1 hour. An hour ticks by and the mall closes, we’re waiting outside in the snow (it’s basically a blizzard). 15 minutes, 30 minutes….no sign of my mom. (And please keep in mind, this is before cell phones!) Eventually, Mawmaw sticks us on the local bus home. I don’t remember much at that age, but I do distinctly remember how furious my grandma was when my mom and Mindy finally showed up at the house. And I do mean furious….Mawmaw told them off like never before, expletives a plenty! Little did we know, but my mom and Mindy were circling the mall looking for us, but somehow couldn’t find us. Apparently, after they couldn’t find us, they drove home, but we weren’t there. They went back to the mall, but we were already on the bus. You literally can’t bring up that story in my family without everyone dying laughing because even 20 years later, Mawmaw would get just as mad as ever! She swore that they just left us there in the snow while they kept on with their shopping lol!
I think the reason Mawmaw loved Macy’s so much, and in turn passed her love for the store down to my mom and myself, is because of the range of clothing options. There’s something available for every type of lifestyle, from fancy (as Mawmaw would say), to casual, to leisure… There is something for everyone. The petite brands include: INC International Concepts, Alfred Dunner, Alfani, Style & Co., Charter Club, NY Collection and JM Collection. My personal favorite petite brands are INC and Alfani. I discovered both lines back in high school and regularly shop them.
I think a lot of women have misconceptions about what being “petite” is. Petite is often described as women who are 5’4″ and under. I’m 5’4″ on a good day. Refer to the Macy’s Petite Fit Guide for fit information and fashion trends.
Now that Fall is upon us, it’s time to refresh our closets with some must have pieces that we can wear into the colder months. The trends this season that I’m personally most excited for are statement jackets and A-line skirts.
In the first look, I’m wearing an on-trend INC International Concepts Petite statement trench coat. This coat alone is the hero piece of any look. For the second look, I’m wearing a simple black mock-neck top paired with an amazing color block skirt both only at Macy’s from INC International Concepts Petite. This skirt is so fun and can be paired with several different styles of shoes to change the overall feel of the outfit. For the last look, I chose to go monochromatic with my top and bottoms in all black. The grey vest not only breaks up the look, but also becomes the hero of this look. All three Petite looks are so chic and so on trend for Fall.
What I’m Wearing:
INC International Concepts Petite Python-Print Trench Coat (XS) // INC International Concepts Petite Ribbed Mock-Neck Sweater (XS) // INC International Concepts Petite Colorblocked Faux-Leather Pencil Skirt (2P) // Alfani Petite Long-Sleeve Ruched Turtleneck Top (PS) // Alfani Petite Mariner Trousers (PS) // Alfani Petite Long Open-Front Vest (PS)

I am the bad mom that shopped too long that day. We’ve had so many good laughs over this incident. Still to this day Macy’s is my go to store. As a matter of fact I shopped there this week for a birthday gift and had no problem finding one. Thanks for sharing one of our memories.
