Cleaning is something I (weirdly) enjoy. I can’t focus in a messy or dirty space, so cleanliness really is next to Godliness in my book. ?
I’ve gotten a lot of questions about my cleaning and laundry schedule, which I used to follow religiously, but now I’ve found that ditching a schedule for daily chores has helped tremendously.
Our first home was smaller that our current home, with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. I would wake up Saturday morning and do our laundry and clean the whole house. Then I was set for the week ahead.
After Hello Gorgeous started picking up, I found that cleaning took valuable work time away, so I hired a cleaning lady to clean every other week. I still did all of the laundry and cleaned every other Saturday.
When we moved into our last house, there was a significant change… A lot more square footage. It more than tripled the cleaning time and I was newly pregnant, so we decided to have our cleaning lady come weekly. Honestly, that was the best thing ever as my pregnancy progressed and especially when I had a newborn in tow.
When we moved to Nashville, my mom and I took back the cleaning chores. With Covid happening, I didn’t feel comfortable having someone come into our home to clean. It’s our largest house yet and takes so much time to clean. I’ve found that instead of doing it all in one day, I break it up into tasks throughout the week.
laundry
When it was just Matt and I, I did two loads of laundry a week. One whites and one darks. Those were the days. With Kenny, our laundry load has increased significantly.
Instead of sticking to my normal laundry day (Monday) I’ve pivoted and throw in a load when I need to. Note: I did not say when things get out of control. I keep an eye on our laundry basket and when it’s full, time to throw in a load. It’s so much easier to wash and put away one load at a time than an entire day full of laundry. This method has helped me keep my sanity.
dishes
I believe that keeping your sink clean and dish-free immediately gives your kitchen the appearance of cleanliness. If you walk into your kitchen and see a sink full of dishes, it feels like your entire kitchen is wrecked. I run the dishwasher every other day, mostly at bedtime, and put the clean dishes away the next morning.
beds
Making your bed each morning makes you feel like you’ve got your life together, even when everything is falling apart. Don’t believe me? On a terrible day, if you walk into your bedroom and your bed is made, it feels like you’ve somehow got your life semi-together. Just me? lol. But really, I’ve read time and time again that some of the most successful people in the world swear by making their beds every day.
While we’re on the topic, please change your sheets regularly. Personally, I think your sheets should be laundered once a week. Your pillowcase is a breeding ground for acne, so make sure your keeping yours as clean as possible to make your skin happy.
floors
My robot vacuum (coupon code coming next week!!! PARTAY!) is my BFF. I start it downstairs every night at bedtime, right after the dishwasher, and let it go to work. When we wake up the next morning, my floors are swept and he put himself back on his charging station to prep for his next night at work.
I also vacuum with my handheld every day. No, I don’t sweep the entire house daily, but I do sweep the most important spaces: the mudroom, kitchen, living room and foyer. If you take 5 minutes out of your day to sweep the entryways to your home, your keeping the outside dirt away. That dirt we track in at the door is what we walk all throughout the house. So I keep both the front door and back door areas swept daily. I also keep the kitchen and living room swept, since we spend most of our day in those spaces.
As for the bedrooms, I vacuum our bedroom and bathroom every 2-3 days just to keep up with all the dang hair I shed. The rest of the house and bedrooms I let my roboVac handle.
I try to mop my floors once a week. This is the best mop I’ve found for my hardwood floors.
kitchen
I’ve already covered dishes and floors, but let’s talk everything else. I spray down my counters usually every day. This small task keeps germs away and keeps the kitchen looking fresh. My biggest kitchen recommendation is to keep your counters clutter free. A kitchen without mail, keys and other junk sitting out looks so nice and organized.
As for my counters (and honestly everything else in my house!) I use Force of Nature. I swear by this stuff because it actually works and it’s safe for babies, pets and people in general! Use coupon code: ANGELA15 for $15 off + free shipping on any kit or bundle.
bathrooms
I do a good deep clean on our bathroom about once a week. I don’t clean the guest room bathrooms unless we have had anyone using them. We will go in and scrub the toilets to keep dust and mold away, but if they’re not used, they don’t get cleaned.
bonus
Add fresh flowers to your home weekly. This little thing breathes so much life into your room. Those flowers will make your heart happy each time you catch a glimpse of them.
