May Favorites + My Current Skin Problems

May Favorites + My Current Skin Problems

It’s been way too long since I’ve done a monthly favorites video.  I decided to rally together my faves that I’ve been using lately to put together this list of May 2016 favorites.  I’m talking a little beauty, a little fashion and a little everything.

I’m wearing several of my favorites on my face for this video…  Talk about practicing what you preach!

I’d also like to talk about my skin for a quick minute.  If you follow me on Snapchat (click to add me) then you’ve seen that I’ve been using facial masks petty much on the daily.  My skin is absolutely freaking out on me like never before.  Literally, like never before.  I’ve never had acne or breakouts in my life, only a single pimple here or there.  Right now, I have random breakouts in my hairline, on my forehead, chin and all over my upper back.  I’ve been to my esthetician (in my dermatologist’s office) and OBGYN.  I’ve tried almost everything under the sun.  My esthetician believes my skin is angry because of hormones.  I was on BC (birth control) for 7 years and my OBGYN took me off about 4 months ago because I was getting up to 2 migraines a week and he was afraid I could have a stroke (that’s not scary at all, right?!)  I came off and my body has had all sorts of whacky symptoms (just a reminder, I was only on BC because of my endometriosis. I’ve since been to a specialist and he thinks that I’ll be okay off of the BC.  Praying that he’s right!  Also, no I’m not pregnant.)  I started with the break outs my third month off BC and nothing has helped.  It began with my entire back, then started in my hair line and about two weeks ago began rearing its ugly head on my face.  I’ve done a back facial and glycolic peel, both on my entire back (separate treatments) and my skin calmed for about 2 days, then was back to zit-ville.  The oil level of my skin has dramatically increased and caused blackheads everywhere.

I’m venting telling you all of this for two reasons:  1. If you have any suggestions or tips for skin issues after coming off of hormones or BC, please leave a comment below for me.  2. To let you know that I’m on a mission to find the products that will help with this so I can share with all of you because anyone who is on BC may have this exact same cross to bear with me.

    Hi Angela,

Loved this video! What a great idea to also talk about household and other items besides makeup and skincare!
As for the acne situation, I can tell from experience that esthetician procedures may help a little along the way , but the truth is it is all coming from inside your body. It is a major change and shock to your body to be off BC after a relatively long time on it. My advice is to just watch what you are eating, hydrate, and don’t overdo it with all the masks and treatments – that may be confusing your skin ever more 🙂 hormones will eventually regulate themselves, unless there is some underlying hormone disbalance (in my case it is PCOS, and acne isn’t clearing up as I would like it to, but if I watch my diet closely for some time and really take good care of my health, it gets significantly better). Over the course of 6 years i have dealt with acne, I have probably tried thousands of products. A good spot treatment is Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion. Any type of clay masks are OK; but again, try to let your skin just be and regulate itself. Good luck and I will be waiting for a video/blog post of whar remedies you have found worked for you! Xoxo

Thanks Elizabete! I love Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion! I actually just used it last night. 🙂
Every time my skin seems to be clearing up, a new problem area pops up. So frustrating! I really haven’t been eating sweets lately and I drink more water than anyone I know. I can’t wait for this to clear up already.

    HI!
I love and enjoy all your videos…Makeup, Hacks and Favorites!
Whats helped my acne…..I gave up dairy (anything cow), occasionally I have goat or sheep cheese. Foods can cause an inflammatory response that can cause skin issues. Some foods you may have not had a problem with and then you can. Drink water, at least half your body weight in ounces. I see my esthetician every 4 weeks for extractions, microdermabrasion and a peel. Weekly clay masks (I actually will sleep with it on). My favorite is emerginC the deglazing mask. Love Murad products for acne, clarifying cleanser and AHA/BHA exfoliating cleanser (I use every 3 days). Mario Badescu’s drying lotion is a great spot treatment. Supplements: evening primrose oil capsules, chaste tree tablets, ovatrophin pmg tablets and probiotics.
Hope your skin clears up soon:) I know how frustrating it can be.
    Good Bless!

Thank you! You’re so on top of your skin, I love it! Mario Badescu really is awesome, you’re the second comment in a row to mention it. 🙂

I forgot about evening primrose! I should absolutely start that back up again, thanks for the reminder! xoxo

Hi, Sngela! Loved the video. Your passion for beauty and fashion inspire me!

I’m sorry to hear about your skin issues. I started having issues with my skin a few years ago. I was breaking out like crazy and ended up talking to an employee at Whole Foods about it. She recommended that I try Desert Essence Throughly Clean Face Wash – Orginal Oily & Combination Skin. I bought it for $8 and was told I could return it if it didn’t work. I was so happy that I NEVER had to return it. My skin has drastically improved since I started using it three years ago. It takes about a week to work, but I promise you will be amazed at the results and the price. Desert Essence also sells blemish sticks, face wipes and shampoo at Whole Foods. I have never tried them though.

Let me know if you have questions! They sometimes are hidden at some Whole Foods so I always ask. Desert Essence also has an amazing website with a lot of products: https://www.desertessence.com

Oops! Just noticed my typo. Meant to put Angela. Sorry!! Stupid autocorrect!! 🙂

Please please please let me know what you find that works for the above issue you are having. I started having the same problem when I got off birth control last year. I had to stop taking it because it may have been the reason for my pulmonary embolism which almost killed me. Scary right. Anyways stopping the BC has made me break out Luke crazy and I’ve been trying all kinds of different things to calm it down but so far nothing’s working. Hoping you find a “cure” and pass it along.

  • Hi Angela,

I love all of your videos! On the skin issue, I know too much sugar or dairy makes me breakout. My best friend also started breaking out randomly, she found out after a lot of trial and error that it was the biotin she was taking. She stared taking biotin to help her skin and hair, and it was working. Then when she started taking extra stength biotin she started breaking out. She found out if you have too much your body starts to regect it and can make you breakout. When she stopped taking biotin it took her skin a couple weeks to get better, but now it’s cleared up. You might want to look at the vitamin/supplements you’re taking.

    Good luck!

    Hi Angela!

Thank you for being so open with the issues you have. I have too recently starting breaking out crazy on my face and park of my neck below my jaw. It was on my forehead and temples mostly wit some on my chin and jaw line. I’ve been on birth control since I was 15 (now 33). I’ve been on the same one (the one that is suppose to help with breakouts). Nothing would clear it up. Anything with salicylic acid makes my face worst so I was trying stuff with benzoyl peroxide. That works sometimes. I believe it is hormones. Also, I just found out I have a cyst on my ovary so perhaps that is related. I did get a sample of Differin from the dermatologist along with changing my face wash. It is starting to get better so not completely sure what was wrong. I was hoping that going through this crap would be done by my thirties!!! lol No such luck!! I hope it gets better for you!!!

Hi Angela, it’s good to hear you sharing these things, I myself suffer from Endometriosis and knew nothing about it until I got a cycst when I was 35yr, it was endo related and was removed but I had to suffer the pain and it getting bigger for 4 months until they could do drain it. Hence I cannot have children naturally and now passed the age of IVF also. But nevertheless I try and keep going with work and teaching my classes, I haven’t had many skin problems with hormone change but find a cry quite often for no reason whatsoever half the time, ha 🙂 so maybe I am affected more with mood changes. I had a laparoscopy when I was 26yr and there was no Endometriosis found but then 10 years later after the cyst, which annoys me as 10 years wasted trying to have children. Anyway keep working and teaching and keep a smile on my face and my fiance Chris is 10 and a half years younger than me so there you go. 🙂 Lots of Love Arlene xxxx

  • Hi Angela,

I don’t know much about coming off of Birth Control (also have been on it for 8 years for endo), however a combination of the below REALLY helped my skin. Dairy is full of hormones so giving up dairy is my top recommendation for you, even if only for a few months to see if it helps. It helped wonders for me!
    AM (during day): Aczone
    PM (overnight): Epiduo
Those are both advertised towards teens however I am late twenties and found them very helpful. See if you can get coupons from your dermatologist they’re much less expensive with the coupons.
+ No dairy + no gluten
+ Neutrogena Body Clear for back

Since my face cleared up I no longer need to use those creams but I really like Kate Sommerville EradiKate for the occasional pimple.
Best wishes to you, hoping you find something that works for you soon gorgeous!!

I have a little trick to reduce breakouts (it has nothing to do with actual healing or anything). I use a coffee scrub (coffee grounds from my coffee machine + coconut oil), it lightens the skin a little bit and makes it clearer. I know it wouldn’t help much, cause it really has a temporary effect, but may help as a sos treatment.

  • Hi Angela!

Great Video. And its very nice I think for you to share this because we can all relate. I won’t give you an better advice than the other girls because everything is great and I’ve tried it and it works! But just one thing that seems totally silly: Have you tried running? It is so basic I know ut evrytime that happens to me, and the time that I got off my pill I tried everything and it didn’t work and then my aunt just told me “go for a run you’ll see”. And everyday I started running more and more bits by bits and in a week It was gone. So Incredible.
    Just a thought 🙂
Anywho, Good Luck to you and I’m sure It will be over soon, your body needs time as it was said 🙂

  • Oh girl! I’m going through the EXACT same thing right now! Just went off the pill after 7 years and have never had acne. Now my forehead, hairline, and back have crazy break outs. Please let me know if you find any solutions! I’m going to my dermatologist next week so hopefully she can help me out ????????

    • Angela Lanter

I hate that you are going through this too, but I’m glad to hear that I’m not alone (I know that’s selfish of me!)
My face has really started to clear up except for blackheads, which I’ll take any day over pimples! My back is still as angry as ever unfortunately. My dr put me on Epiduo for my face at night and Benzo Foam for my back. I’m probably going to go back into the office because of the back issue though. Keep me posted on how you’re coming along and what your dr says!
