My Top 5 Mascaras

My Top 5 Mascaras

What can I say, I’m a lash girl.  I’m a mascara snob.  When I say “mascara snob” I probably should clarify…  I’m not a snob that needs high-end, high-priced products only, actually I’m quite the opposite, as you can see below.  I’m a wand snob.  I find that I typically prefer drugstore brands of mascara over high-end because I think that the drugstore brands just really know what’s up when it comes to wand design.  Girlfriend needs a thick brush that’s going to coat every single lash.  Oh yeah, I loathe lash comb styled mascara wands.
And then there’s formula…  I don’t believe in any mascara brand that claims to curl your lashes.  Nothing gets that job done better than my $2 trusty eyelash curler from Target.  When I’m looking for a new mascara, I’m looking for formulas that thicken.  I’m not a lengthen girl necessarily.  I just really want volume, and lots of it.  I want no smudges, no flakes and no uh-oh’s throughout the day.  I want perfect lashes all day long.  I want to apply one coat of mascara (two coats, max!) and have lashes that kill.  So after testing many different mascaras (everything from Armani to Wet n’ Wild!) these mascaras below made my top 5!
|| M A S C A R A S ||
L’oreal Miss Manga ||  Okay, so I gotta be honest…  I didn’t love this mascara the first time I used it.  Actually, I didn’t love it the first several times I used it.  A mascara with a wand that bends?  No thank you.  I felt like it wasn’t easy to control, and girlfriend doesn’t like not being able to control her mascara wand.  But maybe a month or two later, I busted it out of retirement (i.e.: my mascara drawer in my makeup towers) and gave it another shot.  This time, I knew to expect the flexible wand, and I liked it.  I really, really liked it.  I realized that the flexible wand actually allows you got get in those eye corners and coat those harder to reach lashes, which, if I’m being honest, I don’t even try to hit half the time for fear of marking up my eye makeup with mascara clumps.  It’s still that original fabulous Voluminous formula (or at least a hybrid of it) just with the added bonus of a little flexibility.
Tarte lights, camera, LASHES ||  I didn’t expect to love this mascara at first.  In fact, I tried my best not to love it since it’s not a drugstore brand (I prefer the cheaper price tag, don’t judge me!)  But I found myself gravitating towards it every time I applied mascara, and I really didn’t know why…  Then I realized, it’s amazing, that’s why.  This mascara gets right down into my lash roots so quickly and so easily which means the brush design is spot on.  It claims to curl your lashes, which again, I disagree with.  But what it does do is hold my lash curl (after I curl with eyelash curlers) all. day. LONG.  And any mascara that does that gets an A+++ in my book.  It lengthens your lashes like no joke all the while plumping them up.  It’s not the most volumizing formula, but it’s a fabulous all around mascara for all the reasons I mentioned above.
L’Oreal Voluminous (Carbon Black) ||  What can I say about this mascara that you don’t already know?  If you haven’t tried Voluminous at least once in your lifetime, then I think you’ve probably been living under a rock (or you at least better have another great reason!)  This mascara has a super plush brush that just really does something for me.  It’s definitely the most basic mascara on my Top 5, but what can I say?  Sometimes I’m a basic girl.  ðŸ™‚  For girls with sensitive eyes, this one will probably work best for you!  I’m a Carbon Black girl…  I want my lashes as black as possible, so this one does the trick.
Maybelline Pumped Up! Colossal Volum’ Express ||  This mascara boasts having the largest brush of any Maybelline mascaras…  Which is why it’s so good.  Because the brush is so large, I feel like I’m able to get my lash roots coated really well which isn’t always an easy thing to do.  The collagen in this mascara really pumps up those lashes (do you see what I did there? lol!)
L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes ||  I love the brush for this mascara!  It stays put…  No smudging, no flaking.  Just a solid mascara all around.

Honorable MentionDior Diorshow Mascara.  This mascara is probably my favorite high end mascara.  It gets honorable mention because it does everything I need my mascara to do.  I didn’t give it top 5 since I feel like Voluminous is a perfect dupe for it.  I’d rather spend $5 on Voluminous than $27 on Diorshow and my lashes look just as fabulous either way.

*Updated Honorable MentionPhysicians Formula Eye Boost Instant Lash Extensions Kit.  This stuff is the bomb-dot-com.  3D lash fibers are all the rage right now and for good reason…  They work!  This kit is simple to use (just be careful when applying fibers so you don’t make a mess on your face!) and your lashes will be insane after two rounds of application.  Every time I wear this mascara kit, I look like I’m wearing false lashes and get compliments on them.  Be careful to brush/comb through the lashes thoroughly to prevent clumping.

Let me know in the comments what your #1 mascara is and why!!

      Try waterproof if you're an eye rubber 🙂

      I'm not a Better Than Sex fan. I have it, but the want/formula combo isn't for me. 🙂

    Do you prefer waterproof or non-waterproof mascara? I have found that waterproof ALWAYS holds the curl longer, where non-waterproof mascaras seem to be more of a watery consistency and weights down my eyelashes. I also warm my curler with the blow dryer for a few seconds before I curl to get a lasting stay.

      Personally, I'm a non-waterproof girl. It always makes my lashes fall out. I also use the blow dryer trick 🙂

    I love They're Real by Benefit, but I don't love the price. What would you say is the best comparison?

    • AngelaLanter

      HI Caitlyn! I've actually never tried They're Real! What features do you love about the formula?
