FOTD: Step By Step Smoky Eye Tutorial

FOTD: Step By Step Smoky Eye Tutorial

I know some of you wanted to see close-up shots of my makeup that I wore to the InStyle Golden Globes Party..  So I’m breaking it down for you, showing step by step how I got this smoky eye look!
Unfortunately we ran out of time to take photos before the party (what can I say? Girlfriend ALWAYS running late!)  These photos were taken at the end of the night so the makeup isn’t as fresh and colorful as it started out..  Sorry!  But you get the general idea 🙂
I used my regular HAC routine on my face (exactly as shown in my “Highlighting and Contouring” Routine video on YouTube.)  For my eyes, I used my Urban Decay Naked 3 palette.  Read on below to see how I got this look!
I’m just going to talk about my eye makeup here since I just posted my full HAC routine! I know in the middle photo my eye on the left looks darker on the outer corner.. My lashes have a natural “kink” so they curl up like crazy in that corner.
After I finished my face makeup, I applied Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer all over my lid.  I broke out my new Urban Decay Naked 3 palette (one of my fave Christmas presents!) and applied “Strange” lightly all over my lid.  I then used my MAC 239 Eye Shading Brush to apply “Limit” to the center of my lid and “Nooner” on my outside crease and blended it out well.  I then used an angled eyeliner brush (wet) and applied “Darkside” as my upper eyeliner.  I find that applying the shadows with a wet makeup brush helps really bring out the pigment in the eyeshadow.  I then used a dome shaped brush (dry) to pull the “Darkside” along my lower lash line.  I applied a tiny bit of “Dust” to my inner corners and brow bones.  I tightlined my upper waterline with a black gel liner similar to this one.  I did not line my lower waterline..  Like I said above, these pics were taken later in the evening so anything you see on my lower waterline is actually just fall-out.
Of course you gotta finish your smoky eye off with some va-va-voom lashes!  I used my go-to mascara right now, L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lash Mascara.  So here’s my eyelash trick: I curl my lashes and apply one coat of mascara.  Then I comb through them (while your lashes are wet still!) with a eyebrow brush to separate the lashes and remove any clumps.  Then I let my lashes dry fully, come back with the eyelash curler and curl again (make sure they’re totally dry and not tacky or they’ll stick to the curler! You don’t want to rip any lashes out, girlfriend!!)  Then I apply a full-on second coat of mascara to really get that oomph going.  I only apply one coat to my lower lashes because I hate when they get that “spider leg” look.
If you want to apply false lashes, I typically apply them between the first and second coat of mascara to help them appear to be a part of my lashes and not stand out.  I also go lighter on the mascara when I’m wearing falsies.
I hope you enjoyed this little break down of my look!  If you have any makeup tutorial requests, leave them for me in the comments section!
