How to Fake Lash Extensions – DIY Eyelash Extensions

How to Fake Lash Extensions – DIY Eyelash Extensions

I love eyelash extensions.  So much so that I had to figure out how to create my own DIY eyelash extensions.

Like really love them.

Buuuuuuuuuuut, I have crazy sensitive eyes that absolutely will not tolerate the glue.

Yes, I’ve tried different glues, different techs and I end up with insanely swollen eyes every time. #notworthit

Since I love the look of extensions so much, I wanted to find a way to recreate the look for two reasons:

  1. They’re dang expensive.  Your average mama doesn’t have hundreds of dollars just lying around to spend on her lashes every month.  No to mention, hiring a babysitter while you’re getting your lashes filled.
  2. They’re time consuming.  A full set will have you laying there for a couple hours.  Again, not many women, and especially mamas, have the luxury of that time alone.

I got to work to find the best combination to create the same effect as extensions without the high cost of money and time.

And I did it.??

I found the winning trio of products to get those stellar lashes.

Lashes so amazing that people think I have extensions.

First product you need is lash serum.

I have personally never tried the most popular serum, Latisse.  I was just too afraid of my eyeballs changing colors.

However, I have tried this serum, this serum and this serum

Hands down, this is my favorite serum

If you’d like me to write a full post on my experience with the different serums and my various results, comment below and let me know.

There is no magic tonic that will give you the lashes of your dreams overnight.  Lash growth serums do work, but it does take at least a couple weeks to see a difference.

Next, you need an amazing mascara.

I used Thrive Causemetics mascara for well over a year, but then found this drugstore dupe and only use it now!

with and without mascara

Pretty dramatic difference between my right eye and my left, right?

This was only one coat of mascara.

ONE.

Why do I love this mascara so much?  Let me count the ways…

  1. It’s easy to remove.  You don’t have to rub your eyes to get all of your mascara off like you do with virtually every other mascara formula on the market.  Thrive requires a little water and it comes off of your lashes in tubes.
  2. It plumps like crazy.  Thrive adds so much volume to your lashes.  They look thicker and fuller with only one coat.
  3. The wand separates.  The thing I’m most picky about with mascara is typically the wand.  When I opened my first tube of Thrive mascara, I had a whomp whomp moment.  The wand was unimpressive.  I chose to push through my disappointment and try it out anyways…  Boy, am I glad that I did.  This wand separates your lashes like a superstar.
  4. The formula lengthens unlike any other.  My lashes have never, and I repeat, never, looked so long before.

After my lashes reached their new amazing lengths with serum and found perfection with my favorite mascara…  I still needed a little oomph.

Enter my favorite false lashes of life.

Initially, I tried magnetic lashes and they were a bust.

Months later, I decided to give them another try and fell head over high heels in love.  But, there’s a catch…  There is only one pair that I’ve found that are of everyday wearability quality.

My beloved lashes are the Ardell Magnetic Accent Lashes in #001, which are accents only, not full lash bands.

The magnetic full lashes simply won’t do.  They are too hard to get perfectly aligned when in a hurry.

The accents are only have the eye length, therefore much easier to get right fast.

The one major hack I’ve found to make application quick and easy: apply them when your lashes are still a tiny bit tacky.  The tackiness of the mascara gives extra grip for the magnets to hook on to.

Watch my tutorial where I show my first-timer cousin how to apply these magnetic lashes here.

voilà!

  • I have been wanting to try this one, but I have really picky lashes! They’re ridiculously long, but ridiculously straight. In order for them to stay curled, I have to use Waterproof, and have been using Chanel Inimitable for years. It’s great, and my lashes look amazing, but it’s a pain to get off! Do you think this formula would work for super straight and picky lashes? They’re so bad that if I don’t use waterproof, they just go stick straight again!!

I also have super pin straight lashes (check out my before mascara photo!) I’ve found that if I curl my lashes immediately before applying mascara then curl again VERY carefully while they’re tacky, then apply my magnetic lashes, they hold the curl without a problem.

These are the only lash curlers that I’ll use. They work better than any other I’ve ever tried! http://bit.ly/31s0y5G

  • Omg yes!! I tried like the homemade lash serum….castor oil, vitamin E and pure aloe Vera. I thought it was working, but I don’t think it did. So I’ve been using the telescope mascara (I forget the brand) and that makes my lashes a little longer but it runs out so quickly

That’s L’Oreal! I haven’t tried that one, but L’Oreal is definitely my favorite drugstore brand mascara!

  • Great post! How do you apply grandelash? Do you wear it every night? More info please.

    • Angela Lanter

I apply every night at first! I need to write a full post about my Grandelash experience I think?

      • Terri Rice

Yes please! I am looking for a lash serum now that my lashes are finally starting to grow after having gone through chemo. Yet there are SO MANY on the market all claiming to be the best. Would love to hear your experience with this product. ❤️

        • Angela Lanter

Terri, I’m so glad to hear that your lashes are growing back! I’ve personally had an amazing experience with Grandelash!!

  • Great tips! Can’t wait to try them all! ?

  • Can you show us how to apply these? I bought some and can hardly get them to align in the corners. They just stick out more straight than rounded to my eye shape.

  • Hi Angela.

I think it would be great of you did a blog past on your lash serum. I would lovd to see more of your hacks and the story behind it. I thoroughly enjoyed this blog post. A quick question.

Do you need magnetic lashes if you naturally have long lashes ?

    Many thanks
    Erinn

    • Angela Lanter

Hey Erinn! You never need false lashes, I just love the added volume. 🙂

  • Thanks for your time in putting this together, Angela. This combo is so helpful! I would love a lash serum comparison post!

Loved this post and the video with your cousin putting on the magnetic lashes. I’ve tried the magnetic lashes before and couldn’t get the hang of them. I tried again after your suggestion of using the 001 and now I’ve got the hang of it! The accents are much easier to use! It’s amazing how much big lashes will elevate a look.

  • Im looking for a mascara like this for such a long time.
    thank you for sharing.
Im gonna buy one with my lash extensions

    xoxo

Im sorry to hear that you had to stop using extensions due to the glue’s ingredient effects on your eyes. I know there’s a bunch new formulas out there for different sensitivities such as latex and formaldehyde free.

Will definitely recommend this post to my more frugal friends looking for cost effective options for getting volume eyelashes!!

    Thanks!
