Fall Pumpkin Canvas Painting DIY

Fall Pumpkin Canvas Painting DIY

I had a lot of fun with today’s project creating this Fall Pumpkin Canvas Painting.

I love being creative and painting is definitely a fantastic way to be just that.

I got my inspiration for today’s DIY project from my cousin Jen’s Fall decorations, which you can see in this post.

I haven’t painted in years, so forgive me that my outcome isn’t perfect…  But I’m pretty darn happy with it.

How fun is it that I now have a Fall themed painting that I made myself, that I can bring out every Autumn?!  It was so easy to make too.

I decided to go with a gray background and applied with a sponge brush.  I did tape off the edges of the canvas really well so there wasn’t any ugly bleeding of paint down the sides.  For this project, I used canvas and acrylic paints that I bought from Hobby Lobby.

Next, I mixed in a little peach/apricot into my white paint to make it a little less bright white and painted two large “C’s”.

I then painted two smaller “C’s” within the larger.

I then added in a third set of painted “C’s”.

I filled in my outer blank areas with white paint.

Then I mixed together the burnt sienna (red-brown) paint with a small amount of white paint.

Then I painted thin lines to show where the pumpkin crevices would be.

Just like makeup, you gotta blend it out to make it look natural.

As you can see, by blending out the light brown, it creates a very natural shadow-like effect.

I used the burnt sienna shade of brown paint to create the pumpkin’s stem and brushed in a little white to give it a pretty shaded look.

I then created a mint green/turquoise shade of paint by mixing together white, turquoise and lime green, and then used the same technique to create a smaller pumpkin.

I used the burnt sienna paint color straight (no white mix-in) to create the smaller pumpkin stem.  I used the burnt sienna and white paint combo to paint “Fall” and to create the shading effect on the smaller pumpkin.

Here’s the finished project.

I love how it turned out.  I spent probably about one hour on this, but I had the best time making it.

This is such a fun DIY and so cheap to make.  I used my 40% off one item coupon at Hobby Lobby on my paint set and I bought a two canvas set for around $6.  You can also purchase everything you need at Michaels or Joann Fabrics.

I hope you enjoyed this project.

I you decide to recreate this painting yourself, please post a photo on Instagram or Twitter and tag me…  I’d love to see your work.

Since writing this post several years ago, I’ve recreated the painting and left off the word, “Fall”.

Here’s how my latest painting turned out:

  • I love that you try new things! 😀 Do the seasons really change in Southern California? I can't imagine seeing the leaves changing and falling out there, but then again, I've never been to SoCal. Forgive me for my naivete! 😉

Thanks Jen!! Not dramatically, but things will eventually cool off for wintertime 🙂 We do lose leaves on certain trees though!
