It’s that time of year again…  Time to make our resolutions for the New Year ahead.  If you’re anything like me, you set yourself up for failure before the ball even drops.  I make plans for the coming year that are overwhelming and basically impossible.  Then, before I know it, another year has passed and my goals are the same ones I’ve had for the past 5 years in a row.

I took this past week between Christmas and New Years to sit down and reflect on 2016…  On what I did right or wrong, and what I lessons I learned.  I then built a plan for the upcoming year ahead.  This week I carved out some time with Matt to discuss our goals and dreams for 2017, and devised a rough life plan.  This week got me thinking about the practical ways you can ensure that you’re setting yourself up for a successful year…  Which lead me to writing this post, in order to share the wealth with my Gorgeous fam.

How to Set Attainable Goals for 2017

  1. Don’t set yourself up for failure.  Failure in goal setting can happen several ways.  You can take on too much or you can even go into it with the wrong mindset, causing you to fail before you even begin.
  2. Be realistic.  Instead of 25 goals that are humanly impossible to achieve, narrow your list down to the most important goals for this year.  Don’t bit off more than you can chew…  You’re only one person.
  3. Set specific goals.  Drop the blanket resolutions such as, “lose weight.”  Instead, set a specific, yet realistic goal such as: lose 4 pounds per month/1 pound per week.
  4. Find an accountability partner.  My best friend, Megan, and I call each other, “Accountability partners.”  We do this to check in with each other and hold each other accountable whenever we need some truth (spoken in love) injected into our lives or even particular situations.  Find a friend who has a goal(s) for this coming year and schedule a lunch date to discuss how to best hold each other accountable.  When you’re not just letting down yourself, but someone else, by not achieving your goals, you tend to stay more motivated.
  5. Journal.  There is such freedom in journaling.  When I write down my thoughts and feelings, I personally experience an emotional release.  When I re-read my words, I often find myself thinking about my situation differently. Journaling is especially important in goal setting because it helps you to check in and track your progress throughout your journey.
  6. Don’t forget to include spiritual goals.  Including God in my every day life is crucial.  The days I lack to connect with Him feel much different than the days I purposefully make time to get into His Word.  If you’re a Christian, setting Bible reading or devotional goals are a great way to ensure that you’re staying plugged in to God’s Word on a daily basis.
  7. Reward yourself.  Hit a landmark towards one of your goals?  Celebrate!  Allow yourself to indulge once in a while in order to reward yourself for the work you’re putting in.
  8. Buy a planner.  I live my life out of a planner.  My favorite is the Create 365 The Happy Planner.  I use the three columns daily to separate my business and personal plans for each individual day.  I love utilizing planner stickers to brighten up my week and make organizing my time more fun.
  9. Create a life plan.  I’m an avid podcast listener.  The one thing I hear almost every business speaker talk about is life plans.  I think it’s important to set aside time to create a plan for what you want to achieve in your life.

Great post! Looking forward to 2017. My goals are to remember to slow down more with my little ones and spend more time in God’s word. I’m so guilty of getting focused on getting things done around the house and not taking time to just enjoy watching my kids grow.
Happy New Year to you and your hubby! Love all the winter pictures!

My goals is to read all the pages of quran and learn more about Islam.
I saw on youtube that Janet Jackson and Lindsay Lohan was Reading quran and I got inspired of her. Before When Lindsay did not read quran she used to do drugs, but now When she is Reading quran she have stopped using drugs. I am happy to see her getting better now when she started to read quran.

My second goal is to start give money to maby unicef or actionaid or red cross.

  • Happy New Year to you and Matt! First of all I love how much depth you put into your post! Happy New Year!!!

This was very helpful to read. I have been struggling on what my goals should be. I am going to use these tips to help me, while I am trying to figure them out. Thank you.

Hope you and Matt have a wonderful year.

  • Thats an amazing Video!! I would love to see more of something like this… I’m also a “Travel-Wife“.. my hubby is from another country and he moved to my place (Austria, Europe) before 5 years. His whole family is living in the South of Croatia, so we’re going there as often as possible. Sometimes we’re living over there the whole summer, sometimes we’re driving 7-9 times in the year down and staying each time for 1-3 weeks. It’s kind of exhausting, because its everytime around 8-10 hours of driving (just one way), but… you really said it right: Home is where your heart is.

    • Angela Lanter

Thank you, Corinna! You understand the crazy travel life too!

  • For fear of sounding like a fan girl, I just want to tell you how inspirational you have been to me. I watch your husbands show and eventually noticed you had a blog. I was in a total rut. As a mom, wife, and person. I’ve always thought lifestyle blogs were a bit “unrealistic” but found yours so refreshing!
The thing I love most is that you both give glory to God with your work and are not afraid to talk about it
You’ve shown me that I can be in my 30s and be a wife and mom and still take care of myself too!
Anyway, I don’t want to drone on 😉

As for videos I’d LOVE to see a makeup drawer or closet tour!! Thanks for what you do!

    • Angela Lanter

Thank you so much, Andrea! You don’t even know how nice that is to hear! I love that you took the time to leave such a meaningful comment for me! ?

My goal is to start creating video’s of how I cook and bake. Complete videos from start to finish of my own recipes. I have wanted to do something similar to this for several years and always came up with excuses as to why it wouldn’t pan out. This time I am approaching this goal differently because it’s what I want to accomplish for myself. The success of my videos is not my main focus it’s following through and being proud of myself for just that! Great tips Angela I will use these on my journey and I am so proud of all of your success! Love you!

  • Cassandra Pratt

I loved this post! I was just wondering which Bible and devotional do you use? I need a new one of each!
